Learn about our recreational areas open to the public

We have many drinking water storages across our region. While most of these facilities are closed for operational and safety reasons, we provide access to Lake Kerferd in Beechworth for walking, fishing, bird watching, mountain biking, dog walking (on a lead), sightseeing and picnicking.

To maintain the health and water quality of our catchments and reservoirs, water sports — including swimming, boating, canoeing and kayaking — are not permitted at any of our sites including Lake Kerferd.

Fishing at Lake Kerferd

Lake Kerferd is a popular spot for anglers, with species including:

  • Redfin
  • Golden Perch
  • Rainbow Trout
  • Trout Cod

Lake Kerferd is one of only two locations in Victoria where trout cod fishing is permitted all year round.

To ensure our catchments remain safe and clean, please observe these simple rules when fishing at our sites:

  • No boats or other water craft, including kayaks, canoes, paddle boards etc.
  • Fish from the shore only (no wading).
  • No cleaning of fish on site.
  • No berleying, ground baiting, or digging for bait.
  • Don’t litter. Please use the bins provided or take your rubbish home.
  • Recreational fishing licence required. Fisheries officers regularly check our reservoirs for illegal fishing.

Protecting our water

As Lake Kerferd is a vital raw water supply for the Beechworth community, we take water quality seriously. To help protect this precious resource:

  • Water sports are not permitted — this includes swimming, boating, canoeing, and kayaking.

We appreciate your cooperation in keeping our catchments clean and safe for everyone.
