Treated recycled water released in Tallangatta

7 May 2026

Treated recycled water from a lagoon at North East Water’s Tallangatta Wastewater Treatment Plant will be temporarily released into Washaway Creek from 8 May 2026.

The discharge is required to lower water levels in the winter storage so maintenance works can be safely carried out on the dam wall.

The treated recycled water poses a low risk to the environment and there is low risk to human health. The discharge water contains a small concentration of blue‑green algae, and contact should be avoided.

Discharge is expected to occur for up to two weeks initially. Following this, short intermittent discharges of one to two days per week may occur while maintenance works continue. The overall works program is expected to take approximately three months to complete.

Water quality will be monitored during the discharge and for a period following its completion to ensure EPA requirements are met.

North East Water is working closely with relevant stakeholders during this process, including EPA Victoria, North East Catchment Management Authority, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, Goulburn Murray Water, WaterNSW and Towong Shire Council.
