Heavy rain causes Wangaratta wastewater spills

North East Water is managing several sewage spills in Wangaratta as heavy rain continues in the region.
Storm water infiltration into the sewerage system has resulted in spills along One Mile Creek, at Rattray Avenue, Vincent Road, Swan Street and Bronmar Street.
The sewer system is designed to overflow in major storm events, otherwise sewage could back-up into connected properties.
North East Water has notified the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and warning signs and barricades have been placed at each site to prevent public access.
Water sampling and monitoring of creek water will continue in the days ahead. Customers are also reminded not to block their house drains with pot plants and the like as this could result in wastewater entering their house during heavy rain events.
