Heavy rain causes wastewater spill in Beechworth
11 August 2026
North East Water is managing a wastewater spill at the Beechworth Wastewater Treatment Plant in Woolshed following heavy rain across the region.
Stormwater entering the sewer network has caused high inflows to the treatment plant, with a lagoon at the site exceeding capacity and overflowing.
The spill is believed to have reached Spring Creek, which is currently experiencing high flows due to stormwater runoff.
Works are underway to stop the spill, and water sampling and monitoring will be carried out to assess any potential impacts to the waterway.
North East Water has notified the Environment Protection Authority and will continue to monitor the area.
As a precaution, people are advised to avoid contact with creek water in the affected area for several days.
