Heavy rain causes sewage spill in Bright
7 September 2026
North East Water is responding to a sewage spill in Bright following heavy rain across the region.
Stormwater entering the sewer network, combined with a pipe blockage, caused sewage to overflow at a pump station on Ashwood Street before entering the Ovens River.
In major storm events, parts of the sewer system are designed to overflow to help prevent sewage backing up into connected properties.
Water sampling and monitoring will be carried out to assess any potential impacts to the waterway.
The site has been cleaned and disinfected, and warning signs have also been installed. As a precaution, people are advised to avoid contact with river water in the affected area for several days.
North East Water has notified the Environment Protection Authority Victoria.
