Heavy rain causes sewer spills in Tawonga South

4 January 2024

North East Water is managing a sewage spill in Tawonga South following heavy rain in the region on 3 January 2024.

Storm water infiltration into the sewer system and a power outage to a sewer pump station caused the spill near Kiewa Valley Highway.

The spill entered a nearby Junction creek which flows into the Kiewa River.

North East Water has notified the Environment Protection Authority, and warning signs have been erected where appropriate.

The area has been cleaned and disinfected, with water samples to be collected from the creek and river for analysis.

As a precaution we are advising people to avoid contact with the waterways for several days.
