Heavy rain causes sewer spills in Wangaratta

North East Water is managing several sewage spills in Wangaratta following heavy rain in the region on 2 January 2024.
Storm water infiltration into the sewer system caused spills at Rattray Avenue, Vincent Road, Swan Street and Bronmar Street which have entered the nearby One Mile Creek.
The sewer system is designed to overflow in major storm events, otherwise sewage could back-up into connected properties.
North East Water has notified the Environment Protection Authority, and warning signs erected where appropriate.
Each area has been cleaned and disinfected, with water samples to be collected from One Mile Creek for analysis.
As a precaution we are advising people to avoid contact with creek water for several days.
