North East Water appoints new Independent Aboriginal Delegate to Board

4 June 2026

North East Water is proud to announce the appointment of Summer Matthews as the organisation’s new Independent Aboriginal Delegate to the Board.

Ms Matthews brings extensive experience in governance, community engagement, education and strategic leadership. She currently works as Koorie Liaison Officer at Wodonga TAFE and serves on the Albury City Council Aboriginal Advisory Committee and the Wodonga First Nations Reference Group.

Chair Stephen Brown said Ms Matthews’ strong connection to the region and community made her an ideal fit for the role.

“Summer is a proud Barkindji/Ngiyampaa woman who has developed deep ties to our area and brings a strong understanding of community, culture, and connection to land and water,” Mr Brown said.

“Her experience working alongside Traditional Owners, Elders and community organisations will provide valuable insight to Board discussions and support our focus on inclusive, culturally informed decision-making.

“Summer’s appointment reflects North East Water’s ongoing commitment to strengthening relationships with First Nations communities and ensuring Aboriginal perspectives are embedded in our governance.

“The Independent Aboriginal Delegate role plays an important part in supporting meaningful participation of First Nations voices in water management.”
Ms Matthews said she was honoured to take on the role and contribute to all communities across the region.

“I’m proud to step into this role and bring my experience in community engagement and cultural knowledge to the Board,” Ms Matthews said.

“Water holds deep cultural significance for First Nations peoples, and I’m passionate about ensuring those perspectives are meaningfully represented in decision-making.

“I look forward to contributing to conversations that support strong, respectful partnerships and better outcomes for our communities.”
Her work has focused on advancing education and employment pathways, contributing to policy development and Reconciliation Action Plans, and strengthening connections between organisations and First Nations communities.

North East Water was the first water corporation in Victoria to introduce the Independent Aboriginal Board Delegate Program, supporting the Victorian Government’s Water for Victoria policy to increase participation of Traditional Owners in water management.
