Major watermain upgrade underway in Wangaratta

22 May 2025

North East Water has commenced a major infrastructure upgrade in Wangaratta, with contractors now undertaking complex watermain replacement works at the intersection of Tone Road and Sisely Avenue.

The $2 million project is a key investment in improving the reliability and capacity of the local water network. It involves replacing a critical watermain beneath the North East Rail Line and extending along Sisely Avenue to Bruck Court.

Acting General Manager Planning & Infrastructure, Tim Golland, said the works are essential to support the region’s growing demand for water services.

“We’re also upgrading the watermain crossing Tone Road at Sisely Avenue to further strengthen the network,” Mr Golland said.

To reduce community impact, the project has been carefully staged. However, traffic diversions will be in place from May to July, with access between Sisely Avenue and Tone Road temporarily closed. Later in the project, traffic controls will also be implemented along Sisely Avenue as works progress.

“We understand that these changes may cause some inconvenience, and we thank the community for their patience and understanding as we progress with this vital project, which will bring lasting benefits to the community,” Mr. Golland said.

As part of the current eight-year pricing period, North East Water is investing over $300 million in essential water and wastewater infrastructure which is more than double the $141 million initially forecast at the start of the period.

“Looking beyond 2026, further significant investment will be required to upgrade ageing infrastructure and meet the needs of our rapidly growing towns,” Mr Golland added. “These future projects are being shaped through our next price submission which is currently being developed.

The Wangaratta watermain upgrade is scheduled for completion in September 2025.
