Benalla's tap water not impacted by blue-green algae

UPDATED: 13 February 2024

Benalla's treated drinking water remains unaffected by the blue-green algae warning issued by Goulburn Murray Water for the Broken River basin including:

  • Lake Nillahcootie
  • The Broken River downstream of Lake Nillahcootie to the confluence of the Goulburn River at Shepparton
  • The Broken Creek from Casey Weir to Katamatite

It is important to note that North East Water does not source its raw water for Benalla's drinking water supply from the algae-affected portion of the Broken River.

Treated tap water in Benalla is safe to drink and meets Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.

Information on blue-green algae can be found via GMW’s blue-green algae webpage.
