Executive team

Our executives are responsible for managing the operations of the Corporation and meeting the strategic direction set by the Board.

John Day - Executive Operations

John has more than 25 years of experience in Water and Wastewater operational and asset management roles, both in the water and manufacturing industries.

As Executive Operations, John oversees the critical functions of water and wastewater treatment and delivery. Two other portfolios under his control are asset management and systems optimisation which cover the Environmental and Drinking Water Quality Management Systems. 

John is the Executive Sponsor of the Board’s Audit and Finance Committee. He is a former Director of the Water Industry Operators Association and is a member of the Institute of Water Administration and Australian Water Association.

Kevin Freeman - Executive Planning and Infrastructure

Kevin began working with the Corporation in 1998 and was first appointed to an Executive role in 2007. With over 25 years of water-related experience, Kevin brings strong technical and management experience in the delivery of water related infrastructure projects.

Leading the Planning and Infrastructure unit, Kevin manages a team responsible for strategic planning, reticulation development and the delivery and project management of North East Water’s capital improvement programs. His team is also responsible for the management of the Corporation’s dams portfolio and provides technical and engineering functions and support across the Corporation. 

Kevin holds a Bachelor of Civil Engineering, a Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Engineering, and is a member of the Institute of Water Administration and Australian Water Association.

Anthony Hernan - Executive Corporate Services

As Executive Corporate Services, Anthony is responsible for the Finance, Governance, Risk and Information Communication Technology portfolios.

During his 20-year involvement with the Corporation, Anthony has lead a number of key Corporation projects in the areas of financial sustainability, economic regulation, corporate governance and risk management. Anthony has also successfully designed and led the Corporation’s revised approach to strategy development and execution and currently participates at state level through the Institute of Water Administration’s Finance Special Interest Group that looks at finance issues across all state water corporations.

He brings to the role a strong internal customer focus, refined corporate governance arrangements and financial analysis skills.

Anthony holds a Bachelor of Business in Accounting and is a member of the Institute of Water Administration and the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Rebecca Jhonston - Executive Customer and Culture

Rebecca joined the North East Water team in 2010 and has over 15 years of Human Resources experience in public sector.

As Executive Customer and Culture, Rebecca is responsible for the Customer Service function of the Corporation. The People and Culture portfolio is also under her control which incorporates human resources and workplace health and safety.

A major focus for Rebecca is to ensure the Corporation continues to provide exceptional customer service. She will also continue to strengthen North East Water’s organisational culture and help create a more diverse and inclusive organisation that better reflects the communities it serves. Rebecca is the Executive Sponsor of the Board’s Performance Committee.

Rebecca holds qualifications in Human Resource Management and Organisational Change and is a member of the Australian Human Resource Institute. She is also a Convenor for the Institute of Water Administrations Human Resources Special Interest Group.

Ann Telford - Executive Communications and Engagement

Ann joined North East Water in January 2013, bringing extensive senior management experience from both the public and community sectors.

As leader of the Communications and Engagement portfolio, Ann is responsible for Engagement and Communications functions within the organisation.

A major focus for Ann is strengthening relationships between North East Water and its customers through engagement on infrastructure projects, strategic issues and matters of public interest. 

Ann is qualified in Mediation, Public Participation, Community Engagement and Project Management. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts and the ANZSOG Executive Master of Public Administration.
