Elder-in-Residence

Elder-in-Residence

Become North East Water's Elder-in-Residence

Would you like to share your knowledge and experiences with North East Water?

North East Water is inviting interest from members of the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community to participate in our ‘Elder-in-Residence’ program.

The program will help build our cultural awareness, deepen our relations with our Aboriginal communities and further our reconciliation journey.

The Elder-in-Residence, who will be remunerated for their time, would ideally be available for a few hours once a month (during business hours) to talk with staff and provide advice and guidance on local Aboriginal history, cultures and priorities.

You would also be an integral part of providing insight to our Country & Culture Action Plan.

During the period of the role, there would also be the opportunity to provide insight into matters relating to urban water management and its connection to the Aboriginal community and Traditional Owners.

No formal experience is required. Your personal experience, familiarity with local culture and traditions, involvement with your community and your comfort with sharing your experiences are our key priorities for the role.

The role runs from July 2026 until June 2027. It would start with a dedicated induction process and continue with ongoing support throughout your tenure.

If you would like to express your interest for this opportunity, please provide a letter outlining your interest to hr@newater.com.au and your existing experience or interest in developing skills in any of the following areas:

  • Familiarity with local culture and traditions (noting North East Water operates over 20,000 square kilometres bound by Corryong, Yarrawonga, Benalla and Dartmouth)
  • Involvement with First Nations groups and activities
  • Comfortable to share your experiences
  • Good oral communication skills
  • You are also recognised by your mob as an elder

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us via Robyn Weddall from the Office of the Managing Director at rweddall@newater.com.au or on 0474 271 210.

Expressions of Interest will close at 5pm on 27 March 2026.

This is an Aboriginal Designated Position, classified under ‘special measures’ of section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010. Only Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people are eligible to apply.
