Sewage spill in Beechworth
UPDATE: 19 February 2025
We have lifted our advice to avoid walking or swimming in the immediate area of the sewer spill.
Water quality test results from the day of the spill showed minimal impact at the entry point in Lake Sambell, with no broader effect on the lake.
Additional sampling over the following two days has also confirmed no observable impacts from the spill.

North East Water is managing a sewage spill in Beechworth following a main break along Lower Stanley Road on Thursday 13 February 2025. Wastewater spilled from the damaged main before reaching Lake Sambell.
Repair, clean-up and disinfection works are being completed in the affected area. Water sampling and monitoring will continue over the next few days to understand any possible impacts to the lake.
Signage will be erected in the vicinity, and as a precaution we are advising people to avoid walking or swimming in the immediate area for the next few days.
The Environment Protection Authority has been notified of the spill.
