Lake drawdown brings water restrictions

03 May 2011

Bundalong will begin Stage 4 water restrictions tomorrow (Wednesday 4 May) due to falling water levels in Lake Mulwala.

North East Water will begin carting water to Bundalong from Yarrawonga this week, and is calling for residents to limit their water usage to in-house use only.

The Murray Darling Basin Authority and Goulburn-Murray Water began a partial drawdown of Lake Mulwala last week to control an invasive aquatic weed.

North East Water Executive Manager Operations, John Day, said the lake was reaching a level that prevented pumping to the Bundalong Water Treatment Plant.

“We anticipate we will need to begin carting from Yarrawonga by the end of this week,” he said.

“Apart from the water restrictions, Bundalong residents also need to be aware that the water they will receive from Yarrawonga is fluoridated – for advice on fluoridation, residents need to call the Department of Health on 1800 651 723.”

The MDBA has advised that refilling of the lake is expected to begin in mid-July, ready for the beginning of the irrigation season.

Mr Day said North East Water would assess lake levels before removing the water restrictions.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this situation causes, and thank Bundalong residents for their patience,” he said.

Stage 4 water restrictions ban the use of water outside the home.

Meanwhile, plans for the $5 million upgrade of the Bundalong water supply are still progressing, with tender advertisements for the construction of the 1-megalitre tank due to go out later this month.

North East Water plans to install a dual reticulation system to supply Bundalong with treated water from Yarrawonga for indoor use, and raw water directly from the Ovens River for gardens and lawns.

Designs for the pipeline and reticulation system are nearing completion, with construction tenders due out in June.
