Boil Water Notice for Myrtleford

A Seasonal Boil Water Notice is now in place in Myrtleford.  In consultation with the Department of Human Services, North East Water has implemented a Boil Water Notice from 1 November 2008 until 30 April 2009, to minimise the risk to public health over the warmer period.

During this time customers will need to bring their water to a rolling boil before using for drinking, food preparation, ice making and brushing teeth.

North East Water has been working in close consultation with the Myrtleford Community Reference Group and the Department of Human Services (DHS) to address the ongoing incidents of non compliance in the water supply.

The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) came into force in July 2004 and requires all Victorian water supplies to be managed using risk-based principles and comply with a set of water quality standards, including E.coli.

The current UV disinfection method in Myrtleford is not consistently providing SDWA-compliant water, in particular E. coli compliance.  Numerous investigations and actions have been undertaken to improve water quality and risk management, however these actions have been unsuccessful in maintaining compliance.

As such North East Water has continued to work with the Community Reference Group to explore the future water treatment solutions for the community and have prioritised the timing of the Water Treatment upgrade project to be completed by June 2010.  After working with an independent consultant and the Community Reference Group we anticipate our Board reviewing the technical solution in the coming months.  Once this has been completed we will commence detailed planning for this project.

North East Water understands the impost that these Boil Water Notices have on our community and thanks residents for their ongoing patience in this matter.

We look forward to the completion of the upgrade, which will enable the removal of the seasonal Boil Water Notice.
