Heavy rain causes Beechworth sewer spill

21 November 2022

North East Water is managing a further sewage spill in Beechworth following heavy rain in the area.

A combination of stormwater and wastewater entered Spring Creek on Sunday 20 November 2022, with spilling from a nearby inlet structure on Church Street.

The inlet structure is designed to overflow when excess stormwater is entering the system, otherwise sewage could back-up into connected properties.

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has been notified of the spill.

The site has been cleaned and water samples will be collected from Spring Creek for analysis.

Warning signs have been placed near the spill and along Gorge Road and as a precaution we are advising people to avoid contact with the creek water for several days.

We would ask customers to ensure that any stormwater flows they have within their properties are not illegally piped to the sewer system.

A new pipeline that will reduce the likelihood of spilling in the future and is expected to come online in early to mid-2023.

This new infrastructure will work towards ensuring the town’s sewer system can cope with the current and future growth demands of Beechworth.
