Treated recycled water released into waterways at Wahgunyah, Walwa and Yarrawonga
23 June 2023
Fully treated recycled water from North East Water wastewater treatment plants will be routinely released into waterways at Wahgunyah, Walwa and Yarrawonga from Friday, 23 June.
The waterways include:
- Murray River at Wahgunyah
- Murray River at Walwa
- Murray River via Muckatah Depression and Brownings Road diversion drain, Yarrawonga
Holding lagoons at the plants have reached their full capacity following high rainfall over the summer period and recent wet weather.
The releases are needed to ensure that our dams do not overflow and are likely to continue for the winter period at Rutherglen and Yarrawonga. The Walwa discharge will be intermittent over the same time period.
There are no impacts to drinking water treatment processes. A monitoring program will take place with each discharge.
We are working with our stakeholders during this period, including: EPA Victoria, EPA NSW, North East Catchment Management Authority, Goulburn Broken Catchment Authority, Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, Goulburn Murray Water, Indigo Shire, Moira Shire, Towong Shire, Federation Council, Snowy Valleys Council, the Willows Committee of Management.
