Heavy rain causes Beechworth sewer spill
5 September 2021
North East Water has cleaned-up a sewage spill in Beechworth following heavy rain in the area on the weekend of 4 and 5 September 2021.
A combination of stormwater and wastewater entered the nearby Spring Creek after spilling from an inlet structure on Church Street.
The inlet structure is designed to overflow when excess stormwater is entering the system, otherwise sewage could back-up into connected properties.
The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has been notified of the spill.
The site has been cleaned and disinfected with water samples then collected from Spring Creek for analysis.
Warning signs have been placed near the spill site and along Gorge Road.
As a precaution we are advising people to avoid contact with the creek water for several days.
