Sewer spill in Beechworth Gorge caused by heavy rain
26 July 2021
North East Water has repaired a burst sewer main in the Beechworth Gorge.
A small volume of stormwater and wastewater possibly entered the nearby Spring Creek when a trunk main cracked on 26 July 2021.
Operations crews have cleaned the site and samples have been collected from Spring Creek for analysis.
The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has been notified and warning signs have been placed near the spill site and along Gorge Road.
As a precaution, the Corporation is advising people to avoid contact with the creek water for several days.
North East Water remains committed to improving Beechworth’s sewer network to prevent future spills caused by large quantities of stormwater entering the system.
The Corporation is investing $4.5 million to upgrade town’s sewer pipe system with work expected to commence in November.
