Sewage spill cleaned-up in Wangaratta
19 January 2021
North East Water staff have cleaned up a small sewage spill caused by wet wipes and fats blocking a sewer main in Wangaratta.
The spill occurred on Murphy Street on Tuesday 19 January 2021 and entered the nearby Ovens River downstream of the water treatment plant.
Executive Operations, John Day, said the Environment Protection Authority has been notified of the spill.
"The blockage has now been rectified, with our operations team also flushing the spill location", Mr Day said.
“We are advising people to avoid the area for several days and abide by nearby signage.”
Mr Day added, “People should remember that only the 3P’s should go down the loo – pee, poo and (toilet) paper.”
“Wet wipes should never be flushed, and cooking fats and grease should also be placed in the bin.”
