Treated recycled water released from Wahgunyah and Chiltern wastewater treatment plants

3 September 2020

Treated water from the North East Water Wastewater Treatment Plants in Wahgunyah and Chiltern will be routinely released into nearby waterways commencing from Thursday 3 September 2020.

Executive Operations, John Day, said the decision was required due to recent rain in the region.

“Holding lagoons have now reached their full capacity as our ability to irrigate with treated water from the plants has been reduced due to the wet winter”, Mr Day said.

“To ensure that our dams do not overflow, we need to release some of the water into the Murray River at Wahgunyah as well as Black Dog Creek in Chiltern.

Mr Day added, “The water being discharged has been fully treated and our monitoring program will be continued during the discharge.”

“We are working with our stakeholders during this process including, EPA Victoria, EPA New South Wales, North East Catchment Management Authority, Department of Health and Human Services, Goulburn Murray Water, Indigo Shire Council and Federation Council.”
