Wangaratta's water is safe to drink
Wangaratta’s water treatment plant is operational and the city’s water is safe to drink despite a truck crashing into the Ovens River upstream of our facility earlier this week.
We have more staff stationed at the plant who are running increased testing of river water entering the system. Our monitoring equipment is able to identify any changes in water quality including the detection of oil or diesel.
Collection booms are in place on the river near the crash site, and the pumps we use to extract raw water at the plant are several meters below the surface which stops floating oils, diesel and debris from entering the water supply.
If in the unlikely event that any oil or diesel enters the plant, the substance would be detected and stopped from entering the city’s reticulation system.
