5 June 2019
North East Water staff have cleaned up a small sewage spill in Wangaratta caused by tree roots blocking a sewer main near Ryan Avenue.
Less than 2 kilolitres of wastewater entered the nearby One Mile Creek on Tuesday 4 June 2019. North East Water staff responded quickly and cleaned the spill within one hour of being notified.
Executive Operations, John Day, said the Environment Protection Authority were notified of the spill, and attended the site with North East Water staff.
“The affected main has been unblocked and we have cleaned and disinfected the area”, Mr Day said.
“As a precaution we are advising people to avoid contact with the creek water for several days”.
Signage and an exclusion zone has been erected to notify the public of the spill.
