Heavy rain causes sewage spills in Beechworth and Wangaratta
13 December 2018
North East Water is responding to sewage spills in Beechworth and Wangaratta following extremely heavy rain in the region today.
In Beechworth, sewage has entered Spring Creek and is a combination of stormwater and wastewater from an inlet structure on Church Street.
In Wangaratta, spills in the Vincent Road and Swan Street areas entered One Mile Creek following infiltration of storm water into the sewer.
Executive Operations, John Day, said the systems are designed to overflow in major storm events, otherwise sewage could back-up into connected properties.
“The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has been notified of the spills and its representatives are expected to inspect the sites”, Mr Day said.
"As soon as the rain subsides, the sites will be cleaned-up and disinfected, and water samples will be collected from both creeks for analysis.
“As a precaution we are advising people to avoid contact with creek water for several days.”
