Gong for Corryong bushfire hero
29 September 2020
A North East Water staff member has been recognised for his efforts during the January bushfires in Corryong.
David Dickson, who leads the operations team in the Upper Murray, was recently announced by the Water Industry Operators Association as Victoria's winner of the Spirit of Australia Award.
North East Water Acting Managing Director, Anthony Hernan, said the award is a significant acknowledgment of David’s efforts during one of Victoria’s worst bushfire seasons.
“David went above and beyond to maintain the water supply when bushfires engulfed Corryong, Cudgewa and Walwa,” Mr Hernan said.
“Without his dedication to the community, the impacts on the towns would have been far more significant.
“His entire team were outstanding in keeping the treatment plant online and the pumps working when fire literally surrounded the plant.
“They then worked tirelessly in the following weeks to make sure both towns were able to access clean, safe drinking water when raw water from the river became affected by ash and silt.”
Mr Hernan added, “This award celebrates the Australian spirit of mateship, and David is recognised for having made an outstanding contribution to supporting others.”
“I truly believe David and his team are heroes, and I am so proud of their extraordinary efforts during and after the fires.
