New MD takes the reins at North East Water

20 January 2021

North East Water has welcomed the start of a new Managing Director to oversee the region’s water and sewer services.

Jo Murdoch joins the Corporation from Barwon Water in Geelong with extensive water sector and local government experience.

Ms Murdoch said it is a tremendous privilege to lead a passionate and talented team dedicated to supporting the health and prosperity of Victoria’s north east region.

Operating out of centres in Wodonga, Wangaratta, Benalla, Yarrawonga, Corryong, Beechworth, Mount Beauty and Myrtleford, North East Water provides critical water and sewerage services to more than 110,000 people across a 20,000 square kilometre area.

“I look forward to building on the important work that North East Water and the Victorian water sector is doing to respond to critical challenges such as water security, climate change, population growth and protecting the environment,” Ms Murdoch said.

“This includes working with regional partners to increase the use of renewable energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and expand the use of recycled water for productive purposes. I’m keen to explore any opportunity that is both good for the environment and good for our customers.”

North East Water Chair, Cath Botta, said the Board is delighted to have Jo start in the role as Managing Director.

“Jo brings a wealth of relevant experience to the Corporation and will be an enormous asset to the organisation.

“The Board is looking forward to working with Jo and addressing some of the important challenges affecting water and sewer services in our region.”

Ms Murdoch said she was also passionate about continuing to support customers, community and staff through the pandemic.

“North East Water has a range of support services to help anyone experiencing financial difficulty due to coronavirus (COVID-19) or other reasons. Just reach out and we will be here to offer support,” she said.

Ms Murdoch said a priority in her first three months would be visiting all parts of the service region to strengthen relationships with local communities, with a focus on meeting Traditional Owners, Councils, business and community groups.

“I’m want to learn about their priorities, discuss mutual opportunities and challenges, and look at proactive ways of working together,” she said.

Jo Murdoch’s first day at the Corporation is 20 January 2022 on a five-year term.
