In response to water quality results, expert recommendation and experiences with other towns, North East Water will be making minor changes to the way we disinfect the water supply in Beechworth.
Coinciding with the Beechworth flushing program (26 – 30 Sept), we will be converting from chloramination to chlorination, and delivering water at a more neutral pH. This means that the chemical ammonia will be removed from the water supply, which will lead to better disinfection outcomes and more consistent water quality, with safe drinking water the priority. This change also requires a slight correction in pH, from slightly alkali (8.0-8.5) to near neutral (7.2-7.5).
Customers with critical needs were directly notified of this in case process changes were necessary. For residential customers, there should be no noticeable change, particularly after the flushing program. Chloramination disinfection is relatively unique in Victoria, and has been phased out within North East Water, with both Wodonga and Benalla’s drinking water supplies changed over the past two years.
