Water tariffs to rise by less than $1 a week

21 Jun 2011

North East Water will increase water tariffs by an average of less than $1 a week from 1 July.

The increase is the fourth stage of the Corporation’s five-year pricing path outlined in its Water Plan for 2008-13, which was endorsed by Victoria’s economic regulator, the Essential Services Commission (ESC).

Under the tariff changes:

  • the wastewater service charge remains the same for the fourth year in a row
  • the water service charge rises by 7%, and
  • the water-by-volume charge rises from $2.02 to $2.19 per kilolitre.

North East Water’s Executive Manager Customer and Financial Services, Anthony Hernan, said this year’s rises would increase the average customer’s annual bill by $46.63, based on a yearly usage of 200 kilolitres.

“Currently, though, we are seeing usage hover at around 160 kilolitres per year, which lowers the annual increase to less than $40, or around 75 cents a week,” he said.

“We do understand that these increases may put financial pressure on some customers, and we have various options in place to help them manage their accounts.”

Mr Hernan said one of the key strategies of the Water Plan was to phase in a pricing system to encourage customers to save water and give them more control of the size of their total bills.

“It does this by making the part of the bill that is under your control, the water-by-volume charge, the greater proportion of the total,” he said.

“And over the past few years we have seen this in action as one of the contributing factors to an overall drop in water consumption across the region.”

Mr Hernan said the Water Plan also sets out more than $100 million in infrastructure upgrades throughout North East Victoria, designed to enable North East Water to continue to deliver quality services, even in difficult climatic operating conditions.

“The coming year will see projects including the construction of new water treatment plants for Corryong and Whitfield, the connection of Springhurst to the treated water supply from Chiltern, and expanded water services to Bundalong,” he said.

The most recent Victorian Water Industry Performance Report, produced by the ESC, placed North East Water as having the second lowest total average water account in Victoria outside metropolitan Melbourne.
