Myrtleford water supply interrupted

21 Dec 2011

North East Water has thanked the Myrtleford community for their understanding during a major water supply incident that occurred late on Saturday night.

The Corporation’s field staff from Myrtleford, Wangaratta, Beechworth and Wodonga attended the incident, and worked through Saturday night to restore services to the town.

The response followed the failure of a valve on a critical supply main, at the corner of Undara and Mummery roads, which caused a loss of supply to much of the Myrtleford township.

North East Water’s Executive Manager Operations, John Day, said the failure occurred early on Saturday evening, with crews able to restore supply at 3am on Sunday morning. Full services to the higher parts of the town were fully restored by 7am.

“This was a significant incident, and we had staff from around the region called in to help, including bringing our 1000-litre water cart from Wodonga to keep a supply up to the hospital,” he said.

“We saw it as vitally important that we continued the repair work throughout the night to minimise the impact on the community by ensuring the supply was restored by early Sunday morning.

“Obviously any loss of supply is an inconvenience to customers, and we thank the Myrtleford community for their patience in regard to this incident.

“The failure of the valve has highlighted an opportunity for us to reconfigure the pipe network to reduce our exposure to such incidents in the future.

“We will be fully debriefing the incident this week, and as is our normal practice, one of the key points of discussion will be how to improve our services.”
