Board approves Bundalong scheme

15 Nov 2011

The Board of North East Water has approved the go-ahead for the next stage of the upgrade of the current Bundalong supply after discussions at the October Board meeting.

The Board considered a number of objections in respect of the Township Zone and the Low-Density Residential Zone of Bundalong. However, the Board concluded that because of the significant demand for the reticulated water supply, and having regard to the small percentage of objections received, the scheme has been given approval to proceed.  Written notification has been provided to these residents.

Managing Director Craig Heiner said, “The Corporation will continue to work closely with the community in this important project of securing Bundalong's water future. This project is a major priority for North East Water, and whilst we recognise residents do have individual concerns, we will work together to ensure a successful outcome.”

Moira Shire Council’s Chief Executive Officer Gary Arnold said “Council acknowledged North East Water’s decision to proceed with the upgrade of the Bundalong water supply.”

“Moira Shire Council notes a small number of residents have opposed the upgrade and encourages those residents to continue to work with North East Water to have their concerns addressed,” he said.

Bundalong Action Group spokesman, Peter Elliott, said “the group was pleased that the upgrade was proceeding, and was looking forward to seeing a strong future for Bundalong as a result.”

The scheme was developed by North East Water to meet the needs of a number of stakeholders including the Bundalong community and Moira Shire Council who identified a priority for the proposed reticulated water supply in its strategic planning for Bundalong.

The scheme provides a dual water supply with one pipe to supply high quality potable water for indoor uses and the second pipe supplying river water for outdoor use.  The project will service Bundalong's Township Zone and Low-Density residential area.

The next stage of the project will be an advertisement for construction tenders in December with construction of the $5.7million project to likely begin in mid 2012.
